SOLVENTS

Solvents are used in the manufacture of solvent-borne pressure-sensitive or contact adhesives. They can also be used to remove adhesive residue or to soften an adhesive to facilitate removal.

Acetates

A salt or ester of acetic acid.

Acetone

Miscible with water, acetone is typically used for cleaning purposes in laboratories.

d-Limonene

d-Limonene is extracted as a natural oil from orange peels during the juicing process. It is flammable and skin contact may cause irritation, but d-Limonene is considered otherwise safe for use by humans. It retains a citrus fragrance.

Esters

With strong hydrogen bonds and polarity, ester solvents are able to dissolve a wide range of organic compounds. They are biodegradable and not toxic or volatile.

Solvent Replacements

Replacements and alternatives for traditional organic solvents have been developed to reduce or eliminate concerns related to health and safety, handling, and the environment. Examples include solvents produced from bio-mass and food waste, as well as supercritical CO2.

Turpentine

Solvent produced by distilling resin harvested from live trees (e.g., pines).
